Why Young Indians Should Buy Term Insurance Early

The financial case for buying term insurance in your 20s or 30s.

Buying term insurance in your 20s or 30s is one of the smartest financial decisions you can make, and the advantages compound significantly the earlier you start. The most compelling argument is premium pricing: term insurance premiums are age-linked, and younger, healthier applicants pay dramatically lower rates that are locked in for the entire policy term. A 25-year-old non-smoker buying Rs 1 crore cover for 35 years pays approximately Rs 5,000-7,500 annually — less than Rs 625 per month.

The same cover at 35 years costs Rs 10,000-14,000 annually, and at 45 years, Rs 20,000-30,000 or more. By buying at 25 and paying for 35 years, the total outlay is lower than buying at 35 and paying for 25 years, while getting 10 extra years of protection. Medical underwriting is significantly simpler when young: at 25, you can likely get any amount of cover without medical tests or with minimal checks.

At 40, extensive tests are typically required, and any discovered health condition can lead to higher premiums, exclusions, or rejection. Insurability risk is real: if your health deteriorates before you buy insurance, you may find it impossible to get adequate cover at any premium. Buying young locks in coverage before this risk materialises.

Financial responsibilities compound over time — by your 30s and 40s, you likely have a home loan, children, dependents, and more financial obligations. Having term insurance in place ensures these are covered from the start. The time value of protection matters: the earlier your family is covered, the longer they benefit from the security net.

For a 25-year-old earning Rs 8 lakh annually with a dependent family, a Rs 1 crore cover secured at Rs 6,000/year represents exceptional value.
