Understanding Motor Insurance in India

Comprehensive guide to car and bike insurance in India.

Motor insurance is mandatory in India under the Motor Vehicles Act, and every vehicle on public roads must have at least third-party liability cover. Understanding how motor insurance works helps you choose the right coverage and handle claims effectively. There are two fundamental types: Third-party liability insurance covers legal liability for injury, death, or property damage caused to a third party.

Premiums are regulated by IRDAI and fixed annually — for a standard car under 1,000cc, the third-party premium is approximately Rs 2,094 per year. Comprehensive motor insurance adds own-damage (OD) cover to the mandatory third-party layer, protecting your vehicle against accidents, theft, fire, flood, and other perils. OD premiums are priced by individual insurers and vary based on the insurer, vehicle value, and add-ons chosen.

Key concepts in motor insurance: Insured Declared Value (IDV) is the approximate market value of your vehicle and is the maximum claim amount for total loss or theft. Setting IDV accurately is important — too low means inadequate compensation, too high means overpaying premium. No Claim Bonus (NCB) is a discount on OD premium for each claim-free year, starting at 20% and going up to 50% after five years.

It's linked to the vehicle owner, not the vehicle, and is transferable. Important add-ons to consider: zero depreciation cover ensures full claim without deducting depreciation on parts, engine protect covers consequential engine damage from water ingress or oil leakage, return to invoice pays the original invoice value in case of total loss, and roadside assistance provides on-the-road help. Motor insurance must be renewed without break to avoid loss of NCB and mandatory inspection.
