Travel Insurance for Cruise Trips

Special insurance considerations for cruise vacations.

WBI Editorial TeamUpdated April 2026Verified with insurer sources

Cruise travel presents unique insurance challenges that standard travel insurance may not adequately address. The combination of international waters, limited medical facilities, and expensive cruise bookings makes specialized coverage important. Cruise-specific coverage needs include trip cancellation protection for the cruise fare, which is typically a large prepaid expense.

Cruise interruption covers the cost of missed ports or shortened cruise due to illness or emergency. Missed departure due to transport delays reaching the departure port should be covered. Medical coverage on a cruise ship is essential since onboard medical facilities charge premium rates and serious conditions may require medical evacuation by helicopter to the nearest land hospital, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Emergency medical evacuation from mid-ocean is extremely expensive and should have coverage of at least USD 100,000-200,000. Many standard travel insurance plans exclude coverage while on board a cruise ship or in international waters. Verify that your plan explicitly covers cruise travel.

Some plans exclude ships with more than a certain number of passengers or ships older than a specified age. Cruise-specific add-ons include cabin confinement coverage if you are confined to your cabin due to illness, providing daily compensation. Itinerary change coverage compensates if the cruise skips a scheduled port due to weather or other reasons.

Pre-existing condition coverage is particularly important for cruise passengers who tend to be older travelers. Before purchasing, check if the cruise line itself offers insurance and compare it with standalone travel insurance options. Cruise line insurance may have limitations and higher costs compared to independent policies.

Purchase cruise travel insurance well in advance of the trip to maximize trip cancellation benefits, ideally within a few days of making the cruise booking.
