Third Party vs Comprehensive Bike Insurance

Choosing the right coverage level for your two-wheeler.

WBI Editorial TeamUpdated April 2026Verified with insurer sources

Understanding the difference between third-party and comprehensive bike insurance helps you make an informed choice about your two-wheeler coverage. Third-party bike insurance is the legal minimum required to ride on Indian roads. It covers liability for injury or death of third parties, damage to third-party property, and includes mandatory personal accident cover for the owner-driver.

It does not cover any damage to your own bike from accidents, theft, fire, or natural disasters. Third-party premiums are fixed by IRDAI and cannot be negotiated. Comprehensive bike insurance includes everything in third-party coverage plus own-damage protection.

Your bike is covered against collision damage, theft, fire, natural calamities like floods and earthquakes, riots, terrorism, personal accident for unnamed passengers as an optional add-on, and transit damage. The own-damage premium varies by insurer based on the bike's IDV, engine capacity, city, and chosen add-ons. For new and relatively valuable bikes, comprehensive coverage is strongly recommended.

The additional cost over third-party is modest compared to the protection provided. A comprehensive policy for a Rs 1 lakh bike might cost Rs 3,000-5,000 per year versus Rs 500-800 for third-party alone. For older bikes with low market value, some riders opt for third-party only since the own-damage payout would be small relative to the premium.

However, even for older bikes, the theft protection and natural disaster coverage in comprehensive plans provide peace of mind. Evaluate based on your bike's current value, your riding frequency, parking security, and local weather and traffic conditions.
