Term Insurance Tax Benefits Under Section 80C

How to maximize tax savings through term insurance premiums.

WBI Editorial TeamUpdated April 2026Verified with insurer sources

Term insurance premiums qualify for tax deductions under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, providing significant tax savings alongside life protection. The premium paid for term insurance is deductible up to Rs 1.5 lakh per year under Section 80C, shared with other eligible investments like PPF, ELSS, EPF, and home loan principal repayment. The death benefit received by the nominee is completely tax-free under Section 10(10D), making term insurance one of the most tax-efficient financial instruments.

For the premium to qualify for Section 80C deduction, the annual premium must not exceed 10 percent of the sum assured for policies issued after April 2012. If premium exceeds this threshold, the deduction is limited to 10 percent of the sum assured. For policies issued before March 2012, the limit is 20 percent.

GST on premiums is included in the deductible amount. Rider premiums also qualify for Section 80C deduction as part of the total premium. For NRIs filing Indian tax returns, term insurance premiums are deductible if the policy is from an Indian insurer.

Under the new tax regime introduced in 2020 and updated subsequently, Section 80C deductions are not available. However, the death benefit remains tax-free under both old and new tax regimes. To maximize tax benefits, ensure your term insurance premium fits within your overall Section 80C planning.

If you are already exhausting the Rs 1.5 lakh limit through EPF and home loan principal, the tax benefit of term insurance premium becomes secondary, though the protection value remains primary. Premium payment receipts and policy documents should be retained for tax filing purposes.
