Personal Accident Insurance in India

Understanding standalone PA cover beyond what your other policies provide.

WBI Editorial TeamUpdated April 2026Verified with insurer sources

Personal Accident (PA) insurance provides financial compensation for death or disability caused by accidents and is a category that often overlaps with — but is distinct from — health insurance and term life insurance. Understanding what PA insurance specifically covers helps you identify whether you have adequate protection. Standard PA coverage includes: accidental death benefit (the policy's full sum insured paid to the nominee if death results from an accident), permanent total disability (full sum insured paid if both eyes, both limbs, or one eye and one limb are lost), permanent partial disability (percentage of sum insured based on the specific disability — loss of one limb, one eye, one hand, partial hearing loss), and temporary total disability (weekly benefit, typically 1% of sum insured per week, for temporary inability to work due to accident, usually capped at 100 weeks).

Some enhanced PA policies also cover education benefit for children, home modification costs for disability, ambulance charges, and medical expenses from the accident. Important distinctions from other policies: PA insurance activates only for accidents (sudden, external, violent events) — illness or natural death is not covered. Unlike term insurance, PA pays full benefit for disability (not just death).

Unlike health insurance, PA covers income replacement through disability benefits in addition to medical costs. Standalone PA policies offer significantly higher coverage than PA riders added to other policies. Recommended sum insured: at least 100x your monthly income to ensure meaningful income replacement.

PA insurance premiums are very affordable — Rs 1 crore PA cover may cost only Rs 2,000-4,000 annually for a healthy adult. People in higher-risk occupations (construction, manufacturing, frequent road/air travellers) benefit most from comprehensive PA coverage.
