Maternity Coverage in Health Insurance in India

Understanding maternity benefits in Indian health plans.

WBI Editorial TeamUpdated April 2026Verified with insurer sources

Maternity coverage in health insurance is essential for couples planning to start a family, but requires careful advance planning due to mandatory waiting periods. Maternity benefits typically cover normal delivery (vaginal birth), caesarean section, pre-natal consultations and tests, post-natal care for the mother, and newborn baby coverage. The single most important factor is the waiting period: most plans impose a 24 to 36 month waiting period before maternity benefits can be claimed, meaning you should purchase the plan at least 2-3 years before planning a pregnancy.

Buying insurance when pregnant or just after getting married is too late for maternity coverage. Maternity sub-limits are another critical consideration — the reimbursable amount for delivery is capped at a sub-limit that varies significantly across plans, ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 1,00,000. Newborn baby coverage is equally important: some plans cover the newborn from day one of birth under the mother's policy for the first 90 days, after which the child must be separately enrolled.

Others include vaccination costs, congenital anomaly treatment, and neonatal intensive care (NICU) costs. Advanced maternity features in premium plans may include infertility treatment coverage, assisted reproduction (IVF) coverage, pre-natal genetic screening, and lawful medical termination of pregnancy. Plans with competitive maternity benefits: Niva Bupa Health Companion (Rs 50,000 maternity benefit, 2-year wait), HDFC ERGO Optima Secure (maternity included, 2-year wait), and Star Health Comprehensive (Rs 50,000-75,000, 24-month wait).

Factor in the sub-limit, waiting period, newborn coverage duration, and total premium when comparing maternity plans. If your employer provides group insurance with maternity cover, check whether it has a waiting period and what the benefit amounts are.
