Joint Term Insurance for Couples

Is a joint term plan better than two individual policies?

WBI Editorial TeamUpdated April 2026Verified with insurer sources

Joint term insurance covers both spouses under a single policy, paying out on the death of either partner. While it sounds convenient, comparing it with individual policies reveals important trade-offs. Joint term plans typically cost 10-20 percent less than two separate individual policies combined, making them appear more affordable.

However, most joint plans pay the sum assured only once, on the first death, and the policy terminates. This means the surviving spouse loses coverage and must buy a new individual policy at an older age and potentially higher health risk, resulting in much higher premiums. Some advanced joint policies offer coverage continuation for the surviving spouse or pay out on both deaths, but these are more expensive.

The payout structure varies across plans. Some offer equal sum assured to both partners, while others allow different coverage amounts based on each spouse's income contribution. When evaluating joint vs individual term insurance, consider that individual policies provide independent coverage that continues regardless of the partner's claim status.

Individual policies are simpler to manage, especially in case of divorce or separation. The tax benefit under Section 80C can be claimed individually for separate policies. For dual-income couples, individual policies sized according to each person's income and financial responsibility are generally recommended.

The premium savings from a joint policy are usually not significant enough to outweigh the flexibility and continuous coverage advantages of individual policies. If budget is the primary concern, prioritize individual coverage for the higher-earning spouse first, then add coverage for the second spouse.
