Role of IRDAI in Insurance Regulation in India
How India's insurance regulator protects policyholders.
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) is the apex regulator for the insurance industry in India, established by the IRDAI Act of 1999 and headquartered in Hyderabad. Its primary mandate is to protect policyholder interests while promoting the orderly development of the insurance sector. IRDAI performs multiple critical functions that directly impact consumers.
Licensing and registration: all insurers, brokers, agents, web aggregators, and third party administrators operating in India must be licensed by IRDAI. Operating without a licence is illegal. Product approval: new insurance products and modifications to existing ones require IRDAI approval, ensuring they meet minimum standards.
Solvency requirements: IRDAI mandates that all insurers maintain a minimum solvency ratio (currently 1.5x), ensuring they can meet future claim obligations. Policyholder grievance redressal: the Integrated Grievance Management System (IGMS) allows policyholders to register complaints. Unresolved complaints can be escalated to the Insurance Ombudsman.
Annual reporting: IRDAI publishes comprehensive industry data including claim settlement ratios, incurred claim ratios, and insurer financials that consumers can use for comparison. Consumer protection circulars: IRDAI regularly issues regulations protecting consumers, such as mandating Arogya Sanjeevani standard health product, standardizing exclusions, enabling portability, and requiring specific benefits like AYUSH coverage. The Insurance Ombudsman, appointed by IRDAI, is an independent body that adjudicates disputes between policyholders and insurers up to Rs 30 lakh without charge.
Understanding IRDAI's role helps you know your rights as a policyholder and the channels available when disputes arise.
