Increasing vs Decreasing Term Insurance

How to match your coverage with changing financial obligations.

Term insurance coverage does not have to be a fixed amount throughout the policy term. Increasing and decreasing term options allow you to match coverage with your evolving financial needs. Increasing term insurance raises the sum assured over time, typically by 5-10 percent annually or linked to inflation.

This addresses the concern that a fixed coverage amount loses real value due to inflation over a 20-30 year policy term. If you buy Rs 1 crore cover today and inflation averages 6 percent, the real value of that cover drops to roughly Rs 31 lakh in 20 years. Increasing term insurance counteracts this erosion.

Premiums for increasing term plans are higher than level term plans but provide growing protection. Decreasing term insurance reduces the sum assured over time, typically aligned with a reducing liability like a home loan. As you repay your home loan EMIs over 20 years, the outstanding principal decreases.

A decreasing term plan mirrors this declining liability, providing coverage that reduces at approximately the same rate as the loan balance. Decreasing term premiums are lower than level term plans because the average risk exposure is lower. This is a cost-effective way to cover specific liabilities.

Level term insurance maintains the same sum assured throughout the policy term. It is the most common and straightforward option. Choosing between these options depends on your situation.

For general family protection accounting for inflation, consider increasing term. For specific loan coverage, decreasing term is efficient. For simplicity and broad protection, level term works well.

Many financial planners recommend a combination: level or increasing term for family protection plus decreasing term specifically for home loan coverage.
