IDV (Insured Declared Value) in Motor Insurance Explained

How your car's insurance value is calculated.

WBI Editorial TeamUpdated April 2026Verified with insurer sources

Insured Declared Value (IDV) is the cornerstone of motor insurance and represents the approximate current market value of your vehicle — the maximum amount your insurer will pay if your vehicle is stolen or suffers total loss (damage exceeding 75% of IDV). Understanding IDV helps you set it correctly and avoid being underinsured or overpaying premium. IDV is calculated as the manufacturer's listed selling price (ex-showroom) of the same make, model, and variant minus depreciation based on vehicle age.

The depreciation schedule per IRDAI norms: 5% for vehicles up to 6 months old, 15% for 6 months to 1 year, 20% for 1-2 years, 30% for 2-3 years, 40% for 3-4 years, and 50% for 4-5 years old. Vehicles over 5 years have IDV based on mutual agreement between the insurer and policyholder. Accessories not included in the ex-showroom price (CNG/LPG kits, custom wheels, entertainment systems) should be declared separately for additional premium to ensure they are covered.

Setting IDV too low reduces your premium slightly but means inadequate compensation in a total loss or theft scenario. Setting IDV too high means overpaying premium — the insurer will pay maximum the market value regardless of declared IDV. In practice, insurers allow adjusting IDV within a band of approximately 10-15% of the calculated value.

During renewal, ensure IDV is updated to reflect current market value, especially for cars that hold value well (classic cars, popular models with low depreciation). Return to Invoice cover is an add-on that pays the original invoice value (not depreciated IDV) in case of total loss for newer cars — valuable when a car's market value drops quickly in early years.
