Health Insurance Renewal Tips and Best Practices

How to manage your health insurance renewal effectively.

WBI Editorial TeamUpdated April 2026Verified with insurer sources

Timely renewal of health insurance is critical to maintaining continuous coverage and accumulated benefits. Missing a renewal deadline can result in loss of no-claim bonus, reset of waiting periods for pre-existing conditions, and a gap in coverage during which medical expenses will be entirely out of pocket. Most health insurance policies offer a grace period of 15-30 days after the renewal date, but claims during the grace period may not be covered.

Set reminders at least 30 days before renewal to allow time for comparing options. At renewal time, review your current coverage adequacy. If your sum insured feels insufficient given rising healthcare costs, consider upgrading to a higher sum insured or adding a super top-up plan.

Check if your insurer has added new features or improved existing ones that you can opt for. Compare your renewal premium with fresh quotes from other insurers, keeping in mind that switching means starting fresh with waiting periods unless you port the policy. Porting allows you to transfer to another insurer while retaining waiting period credits and NCB.

To port, apply to the new insurer at least 45 days before renewal. Enable auto-renewal to avoid accidental lapses, but review the policy terms each year before the auto-debit happens. If your health has changed during the year, updating your insurer is not mandatory at renewal, but honest disclosure is always recommended.

Keep renewal receipts and updated policy documents organized for quick reference during emergencies.
