Health Insurance Portability Rules in India 2026
Updated rules for switching health insurers while retaining benefits.
Health insurance portability allows policyholders to switch from one insurer to another while retaining accumulated benefits like waiting period credits and no-claim bonus. IRDAI's portability guidelines ensure that consumers are not locked into a single insurer. The current process requires you to apply to the new insurer at least 45 days before your existing policy renewal date.
The new insurer must respond within 15 days of receiving your application. You must provide complete claim history and medical details from your current policy. Waiting period credits for pre-existing diseases are transferred based on the time already served under the old policy.
No-claim bonus accumulated under the previous policy is carried over in equivalent terms. Key rules for 2026 include enhanced digital portability processing, standardized portability forms across insurers, and clearer guidelines on how equivalent coverage is calculated when policies differ between insurers. Important considerations before porting include that the new insurer may offer different coverage terms, premium may be higher or lower, the network hospital list will change, and you should ensure continuous coverage with no gap between old policy expiry and new policy start.
Porting is not the same as buying a fresh policy. Your coverage continuity and accumulated benefits are preserved. However, the new insurer underwrites the portability application and can modify terms.
If the new insurer rejects the portability application, your old policy continues. Reasons for porting include better claim service, wider hospital network, additional features, lower premium, or dissatisfaction with the current insurer.
