Group Health Insurance vs Individual Health Policy

Why you need personal health insurance even with company cover.

Many salaried employees believe their employer-provided group health insurance is sufficient, but this assumption carries significant risks that can leave families financially vulnerable. Group health insurance, provided by employers, covers employees and sometimes their dependents under a master policy. Typical group policy characteristics: sum insured of Rs 3-5 lakh (often insufficient for major illnesses), coverage ends immediately when employment ends (leaving a gap during job transitions), the employer controls the policy terms and can reduce coverage or switch insurers at renewal, there is no accumulated NCB or portability benefit, and coverage typically ends at retirement.

By contrast, individual health insurance owned by you provides continuous coverage regardless of employment status, higher sum insured tailored to your needs, accumulated NCB over years of claim-free behaviour, portability rights to switch insurers while retaining waiting period credits, and lifelong renewability. The consequences of relying solely on group insurance become apparent during job loss, during the gap period between jobs, at retirement, or when a major illness occurs that exhausts the inadequate group cover and you cannot continue individual insurance because of new pre-existing conditions. The optimal strategy is to maintain both: rely on the group insurance for routine claims to preserve your individual policy's no-claim bonus, while keeping the individual policy active for continuity and larger claims.

When buying individual insurance, the younger and healthier you are, the lower the premium and the shorter the waiting period concerns. Top-up and super top-up plans are cost-effective supplements to group insurance, covering amounts above the group policy limit.
