Family Floater vs Individual Health Insurance
Which type of health plan is right for your family?
Choosing between a family floater and individual health insurance plans is one of the most significant decisions when buying health coverage for your household. A family floater policy covers all family members under a single sum insured and a single premium, making it administratively simpler and typically more affordable per person. For example, a Rs 10 lakh family floater for parents (35, 33) and two children might cost Rs 18,000-22,000 annually, compared to Rs 25,000-35,000 if each member had an individual plan.
The key risk with family floaters is the shared limit: if one member exhausts the entire sum insured through a major hospitalisation, other members have no coverage for the rest of the policy year until renewal. This risk increases significantly in families with older members or those with chronic conditions. Individual plans give each family member their own dedicated sum insured that cannot be exhausted by another member's claim.
They also allow customization — a senior member can have a higher sum insured appropriate for their age and health needs, while younger members have lower, more affordable cover. For young families with members below 40 and no chronic conditions, a family floater is generally the most cost-effective choice. For families with members above 45, or where any member has a serious health condition, individual plans or a combination approach (floater for younger members, individual for seniors) is more prudent.
Some insurers like HDFC ERGO and Niva Bupa offer combination plans that blend floater and individual benefits. Restoration benefit in floater plans, which replenishes the sum insured after exhaustion within the same year, partially addresses the shared limit risk.
