Critical Illness Insurance: Complete Guide for Indians

Why you need critical illness cover beyond regular health insurance.

WBI Editorial TeamUpdated April 2026Verified with insurer sources

Critical illness insurance pays a lump sum upon diagnosis of specified serious illnesses, providing financial support that goes beyond what regular health insurance offers. While your health insurance covers hospitalisation expenses, a critical illness diagnosis often leads to prolonged treatment, loss of income for months or years, lifestyle changes, and home modification expenses — costs that hospitalisation-only coverage doesn't address. Upon diagnosis of a covered condition and surviving a waiting period (typically 30-90 days post-diagnosis), the lump sum payout is made regardless of actual treatment costs or whether you were hospitalised.

This flexibility is crucial: use the money for treatment, to pay off loans, fund family expenses during your recovery, or invest for future needs. Standard conditions covered include cancer of specified severity, first heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, major organ transplant, coronary artery bypass surgery, permanent total disability, and aorta graft surgery. Premium plans cover 30-50 conditions while basic plans cover 10-15.

Coverage amounts typically range from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 1 crore, with Rs 25-50 lakh recommended given the extended treatment and recovery costs of serious illnesses. You can buy standalone critical illness policies from life insurers (ICICI Pru iProtect Smart, Max Life Critical Illness and Disability Rider) or health insurers (Niva Bupa CritiCare, Care Critical Illness), or add them as riders to existing health or term policies. Standalone policies offer higher coverage and more flexible benefits.

Critical illness riders added to term insurance are more affordable but have lower coverage. Pre-existing conditions are typically excluded — buying critical illness cover while healthy is essential, as insurability changes with age and health.
