Comprehensive vs Third-Party Motor Insurance
Understanding the two types of motor insurance in India.
Understanding the difference between comprehensive and third-party motor insurance is fundamental for every vehicle owner in India. Third-party motor insurance is legally mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act for all vehicles plying on Indian roads. It covers only your liability towards others: bodily injury or death caused to a third party, damage to third-party property (capped at Rs 7.5 lakh), and legal defence costs.
Third-party premiums are regulated and fixed by IRDAI annually based on engine capacity — for cars under 1000cc, the annual third-party premium is approximately Rs 2,094. A key limitation: third-party insurance provides zero coverage for damage to your own vehicle. Comprehensive motor insurance adds own-damage (OD) cover to the mandatory third-party layer.
OD coverage includes: damage to your vehicle from accidents, theft of the vehicle, fire or explosion damage, natural disasters (flood, earthquake, cyclone, landslide), and man-made events like riots or vandalism. Own-damage premiums are set by individual insurers and vary based on the vehicle's age, IDV, location, and add-ons selected. For new vehicles and vehicles worth over Rs 3-4 lakh, comprehensive cover is strongly recommended despite the higher premium.
The cost of a single accident repair or theft claim would far exceed several years of premium difference. Add-ons like zero depreciation, engine protect, and roadside assistance make comprehensive policies even more valuable. Standalone own-damage (OD) policies are now also available from certain insurers, allowing you to mix and match third-party and OD coverage from different providers.
For older vehicles with low IDV, the cost-benefit analysis may favour third-party only coverage if repair value is close to IDV.
