Common Exclusions in Health Insurance

Understanding what your health insurance does NOT cover.

WBI Editorial TeamUpdated April 2026Verified with insurer sources

Health insurance policies have standard exclusions that every policyholder must understand to avoid claim shock. The most common exclusions fall into several categories. Pre-existing disease exclusions: conditions you had before buying the policy are excluded during the waiting period, typically 24-48 months — after this period, most plans cover pre-existing conditions.

Cosmetic and elective procedures: cosmetic surgery, plastic surgery for aesthetic purposes, weight loss surgeries (unless medically required), and experimental procedures are typically not covered. Dental and eye care: routine dental treatment, spectacles, contact lenses, and hearing aids are excluded unless the dental treatment is necessitated by an accident. Self-inflicted injuries and substance abuse: injuries from self-harm, drug abuse, or alcohol-related incidents are excluded across virtually all policies.

Maternity exclusions: normal and complicated delivery, related pre and post-natal expenses are typically excluded unless you have a specific maternity rider with the applicable waiting period served. Congenital conditions: diseases or deformities present from birth are generally excluded unless specified in the policy. War and nuclear risks: claims arising from war, nuclear events, or participation in illegal activities are excluded.

Cosmetic dental, LASIK eye surgery, and obesity treatments may also be excluded. Some policies exclude treatment outside India. Reading the exclusions section carefully is as important as reading what is covered — understanding both gives a complete picture of your actual protection.
