What is Claim Settlement Ratio and Why It Matters
Understanding CSR for life and health insurance in India.
Claim Settlement Ratio (CSR) is the percentage of claims an insurer settles out of total claims received in a financial year and is one of the most important metrics for evaluating an insurance company. The formula is: CSR = (Claims Settled / Total Claims Received) × 100. For life insurance, IRDAI publishes individual insurer CSRs annually in its Annual Report — a CSR above 95% is considered good, and industry leaders like LIC (98.8%), Max Life (99.2%), and HDFC Life (98.5%) consistently score at the top in FY2023-24.
For health insurance, the equivalent metric is the Incurred Claim Ratio (ICR), calculated as claims paid divided by premiums collected. A health insurer with an ICR between 75-90% is considered healthy — too low suggests claim rejections, too high may indicate financial stress. However, CSR alone does not tell the complete story.
Consider claim rejection reasons: some claims are rejected for non-disclosure of pre-existing conditions or policy violations, which may be legitimate. The average claim settlement time matters — how quickly does the insurer pay? Most regulations require settlement within 30 days of document submission. The absolute number of claims processed matters: an insurer with 1 lakh claims at 95% CSR has refused 5,000 claims, while an insurer with 10 lakh claims at 95% CSR has refused 50,000 claims.
Look at claim intimation processes, document requirements, and customer reviews to supplement the ratio. For term insurance buyers, CSR should weigh heavily in insurer selection since the entire point of the policy is the death benefit payout.
