Car Insurance in the UAE: What Expats Need to Know

Comprehensive guide to motor insurance for UAE residents.

Motor insurance is legally mandatory in the UAE under Federal Law No. 21 of 1995. Every vehicle registered in the country must have at least third-party liability insurance, though comprehensive cover is strongly recommended given the high cost of vehicle repairs and the busy road conditions.

Third-party insurance covers damage to other vehicles, property, and bodily injury caused by the insured vehicle. Premiums are regulated and relatively affordable, starting from approximately AED 800-1,500 annually. Comprehensive insurance covers the insured vehicle against accidents, theft, fire, natural disasters, and third-party liability.

It also typically includes personal accident cover for the driver and passengers. Comprehensive premiums are calculated as a percentage of the vehicle's value, typically 2.5-5% for new vehicles. A car worth AED 100,000 might cost AED 2,500-5,000 for comprehensive annual cover.

Major motor insurers in the UAE include Oman Insurance, AXA Gulf, RSA, Orient Insurance, Zurich, and digital-first players like Yallacompare and Bayzat that offer online comparison and purchase. Agency repair ensures your car is repaired at the authorised dealer workshop using genuine parts — this is recommended for vehicles under warranty. Non-agency repair uses independent workshops and is cheaper but may void the manufacturer's warranty.

No Claims Discount (NCD) works similarly to other markets: each claim-free year earns a discount, building up to 40-50% over several years. Key add-ons to consider: roadside assistance (essential in the UAE heat), off-road cover (for desert driving), GCC extension cover (for driving to Oman, Bahrain, or Saudi Arabia), and personal belongings cover.
