Car Insurance Transfer Process When Selling or Buying

How to transfer car insurance when vehicle ownership changes.

WBI Editorial TeamUpdated April 2026Verified with insurer sources

When a car changes ownership through sale or purchase, the insurance policy must be transferred to the new owner. Driving with insurance in someone else's name can lead to claim rejection. The transfer process involves both the old and new owner.

The seller should inform the insurer about the ownership change by submitting a transfer endorsement request with the sale agreement, Form 29 and Form 30 from the RTO, the buyer's identity and address proof, and the original policy document. The buyer should apply for the transfer to the existing insurer or purchase a new policy. Transferring the existing policy retains the remaining coverage period, while a new policy starts fresh.

NCB is not transferable to the new owner since it belongs to the policyholder, not the vehicle. The buyer starts with zero NCB unless they have NCB from a previously owned vehicle. The seller can carry their accumulated NCB to a new vehicle purchased within a specified period.

For the buyer, it is often simpler to purchase a new policy rather than transferring the old one, as it allows choosing a preferred insurer, coverage level, and add-ons from scratch. The existing policy can be cancelled by the seller for a pro-rata refund of the unexpired premium. Key steps for a smooth transfer include completing the RTO transfer formalities promptly, informing the insurer within 14 days of the ownership change, verifying that the new policy or transferred policy accurately reflects the vehicle details and new owner information, and ensuring there is no gap in coverage during the transition.

Both the seller and buyer have responsibilities, and clear communication between all parties including the insurer ensures a seamless transfer.
